Condition A: Vintage-Preowned, Jacques Gautier, a very rare 1960s early 1970 necklace-bracelet handcrafted with glass fused onto silver enamel. Jacques Gautier work was celebrated in the retrospective exhibition “Bijoux-Lumière” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1999 and he was named ‘Le Petit Picasso’ des bijoux. This museum rare piece in in excellent vintage condition and both of these pieces are signed at rear J.GAUTIER PARIS & J.GAUTIER. Delivered with a box.

Stunning vintage, very rare Jacques Gauthier necklace and bracelet set from 1960 early 70. They are handcrafted in enamel, glass fused onto silver bases using a technique unique to Jacques Gautier jewellery. Unlike the widespread practice of kiln-fired enamels, these pieces are created using a blowtorch. The supports and mounts are made of silver-plated metal. A long enamel silver-plated necklace set with a pear shape glass fused drop pendant closes with a hook clasp. A matching stunning geometric shapes glass fused bracelet closes with a push clasp with a safety chain. The Story Behind: Jacques Gautier (1924-2004) – he was born in Joinville-Le-Pont in 1924. His work was celebrated in the retrospective exhibition “Bijoux-Lumière” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1999 he was named ‘Le Petit Picasso’ des bijoux.

His father was a cabinetmaker and worked in Paris in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. From childhood, he showed a gift for drawing. It was in the parish of Fontenay-sous-Bois where the Gautier family lived that the young Jacques had a decisive encounter with Dora Victor-Hugo, the wife of the grandson of the illustrious writer. In 1938, when a fire destroyed Jacques’ father’s factory, she took the family under her wing and especially the young man, whom she introduced to her son, the goldsmith François Hugo. Jacques was then 14 years old and had to interrupt his studies to work. He entered a drawing, composition and creation workshop for the Lyon silk manufacturers, on rue du 4-Septembre in Paris. This activity would cease because of the war. He then spent his days at the National Library looking for design ideas to sell to ceramic manufacturers based in Provence. He also apprenticed with a jeweller.It was at this time that François Hugo would play a pivotal role in Jacques Gautier’s future. He introduced him to the art of jewelry, particularly the creation of buttons.
