The Story Behind: Hermès Luxury Crocodile Bags
The small round circle (○) stamp next to the “Hermès Paris Made in France” logo on this Hermès vintage bag indicates that it is made from Caiman crocodile leather. This skin has been discontinued by Hermès due to difficulties in sourcing consistently high quality skins, making this bag with this stamp (○) a very rare find in the vintage pre-owned market retail prices.

Hermès Exotic Skin Stamps
Hermès uses specific symbols, often referred to as blind stamps, next to its logo to identify the exact type of exotic leather used.
Circle (○): Denotes Caiman crocodile leather, a material-skin that is no longer used for the production of all new handbags.
Caret (^) (or upside down V): Signifies Porosus Crocodile, sourced from Asia and Australia. This is one of the most highly valued and expensive skins, known for small, distinct pores on each scale.
Double Dots (••): Identifies Niloticus crocodile, sourced from the Nile river region in Africa. These scales tend to be larger than Porosus and also feature visible pores.
Square (☐): Indicates Alligator Mississippiensis (American alligator) from the freshwater farms of the Mississippi River region. Alligator skin is smoother and lacks the visible pores found in crocodile skin.
