The Story Behind: Madame Augustine Gripoix – Gripoix Poured Glass Technique
The Maison Gripoix, an atelier-work shop founded in 1869, developed a unique technique of using a soldering torch to place molten glass into metal frames, creating vibrant and highly sought-after pieces that simulated precious gems and pearls. While many fashion houses used Gripoix’s components, most pieces are marked with the name of the couturier rather than Gripoix itself. This intricate process was invented by Augustine Gripoix in the 19th century and used famously by French fashion houses like CHANEL, YVES SAINT LAURENT, CHRISTIAN DIOR, JEANNE LANVIN, CHRISTIAN LACROIX, BALMAIN, GIVENCHY, CELINE, POIRET… requires highly skilled craftsmanship. This technique allows for purer colors and greater transparency compared to the older method of using a glass paste that was baked in a kiln, and it provides a unique, handcrafted appearance.
