A stunning, a very rare, collector TRIFARI 1960s Clip-on earrings and brooch set by Alfred Philippe – very rare to find a full set and in perfect condition. This vintage jewellery set was crafted by Alfred Philippe, a talented French jewellery designer with a complex design using high quality material. Handcrafted in hand-cut ruby style and green Cabochons glass, diamante crystals, simulated faux creamy pearls with rich gold tone frame. It is a very fine work among costume jewellery and looks like a fine piece of jewellery. “A Must-Have” a very rare, collector sought after piece from TRIFARI, a rare find in your wardrobe to love, to wear and to collect!
The Story Behind: Gustavo Trifari was born in Naples, Italy, in 1883 into a family of goldsmiths. He arrived in the United States in 1904 and by 1910 had founded a jewellery company with his uncle, Ludovico, under the name Trifari and Trifari.
Since Trifari no longer exists, Trifari vintage jewellery are now collectible and it is now sought after by collectors for its retro style. Since the 1920s, the Italian American designers Trifari produced some of the highest quality, exquisite jewellery designs. Popular in the 1930s with Hollywood producers and actors alike. Particularly famous for chief designer Alfred Philippe, a talented French jewellery designer. Alfred Philippe was a trained fine-jewellery designer who had previously worked with Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Alfred Philippe brought expertise in precious stone-setting techniques that he adapted brilliantly to costume jewellery materials— rhinestones, Lucite, pressed glass, and base metals. His influence shaped the brand’s aesthetic for nearly four decades, until his retirement in 1968. He was the chief designer of the iconic American jewellery company Trifari. In fact, it was him who brought success to “Trifari”, having worked in the company as the chief designer from 1930 to 1968, who, with previous experience with Van Cleef and Arpels, brought high craftsmanship and technique to the company. With pieces which can easily be mistaken for fine jewellery, it is easy to see why so many are held precious in collectors jewellery cabinet.
Trifari even ran advertisements reminding customers: “If it isn’t signed, it isn’t Trifari.”
Nearing the end of the 20th century, in 1994, Trifari merged with Monet Group. Later on, Liz Claiborne also purchased Monet – which Trifari was now a part of. Once this happened, jewellery and clothing pieces were sold under the same name. In 1994, Liz Claiborne Group purchased the fashion jewellery brand. Trifari TM (late 1980s–2000) – The final era of American-made Trifari jewellery used a TM mark rather than the copyright symbol. After Liz Claiborne acquired the brand in 2000 and moved production overseas, newer pieces are generally unsigned and not considered collectible in the same category.
Over the years that followed, the brand was resold several times, and production of Trifari jewellery gradually declined until its discontinuation in the late 2000s.
Trifari jewellery of lower quality was later mass-produced, sold afterward on the Trifari card. On the newer products, you would not see a stamp – this suggested that it no longer had the quality Trifari had once. This is why most collectors prefer the mid-20thcentury pieces to the more recent ones.
